What It Is Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP) is an endogenous 28-amino acid neuropeptide belonging to the glucagon/secretin superfamily. It is produced by neurons in the gastrointestinal tract, central nervous system, and immune tissues. VIP acts as a potent vasodilator and smooth muscle relaxant, mediating its effects through two G protein-coupled receptors: VPAC1 and VPAC2. Beyond its vasoactive properties, VIP functions as a pleiotropic neuropeptide and cytokine with broad immunomodulatory activity, demonstrated in preclinical models to suppress the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-12), enhance regulatory T-cell activity, and exert neuroprotective effects. It is under investigation for roles in autoimmune disease, pulmonary hypertension, inflammatory bowel disease, and mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS).
How It Is Used VIP is reconstituted with bacteriostatic water and administered via subcutaneous injection or intranasal delivery. Research applications include neuroimmunology, inflammatory disease modelling, pulmonary biology, gastrointestinal physiology, and autonomic nervous system studies.
