What It Is SS-31 (D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH₂), also known as Elamipretide, is a tetrapeptide belonging to the Szeto-Schiller (SS) class of mitochondria-targeted peptides. It contains the non-standard amino acid 2',6'-dimethyltyrosine (Dmt) and carries an alternating positive charge that allows it to selectively concentrate within the inner mitochondrial membrane. SS-31 binds to cardiolipin — a phospholipid found exclusively in the inner mitochondrial membrane — and stabilises cristae architecture, thereby protecting the electron transport chain from oxidative damage. It has been extensively studied as a mitochondria-targeted antioxidant with cytoprotective properties in ischemia-reperfusion injury models, heart failure, and ageing-related mitochondrial dysfunction.

How It Is Used SS-31 is reconstituted with sterile water and administered via subcutaneous injection in preclinical research settings.
