What It Is Semax (Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro) is a synthetic heptapeptide derived from the N-terminal fragment (4–10) of Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH), developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Russia. Unlike ACTH, Semax lacks adrenocorticotropic activity, acting instead as a nootropic and neuroprotective agent. Research indicates that Semax increases the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor TrkB, activates serotonergic and dopaminergic systems, and enhances memory and attention in preclinical models. It has also been studied for neuroprotective properties in ischaemic models and cognitive impairment studies.
How It Is Used Semax is most commonly administered via intranasal delivery, which allows direct transport across the blood–brain barrier via the olfactory epithelium. Subcutaneous injection is also utilised in research settings. Applications include neuropharmacology, BDNF pathway research, cognitive function modelling, and neuroprotection studies.
